Okay... now that you know what to do for Task 1 lets look at how to do it. Here's a sample Task 1 for you. Attempt it on your own first then look at the answer structure provided along with useful phrases and vocabulary that you could use in your answer.

IELTS General Writing Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You are staying in a country where the main language is English. You are looking for an opportunity to do volunteer work in a developing country.

Write a letter to the organization you want to work with and tell them:

  • Why you are interested in working with them
  • What skills and experience you have
  • How long you are available to volunteer

Write at least 150 words



Tips for structuring your Answer

Start your answer with:

Dear Sir/Madam,

State the reason for the letter:

I am writing to ask/ tell/ inform you that...

I am writing to ask/inquire...

I am writing with regard to...

Body of the Letter:

I would like to...

I have experience with...

I am available for...

Closing:

Thanking you in advance for your help, I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Useful Phrases:

    This letter is formal applying for work then why the starting example is given as
    Start your answer with:
    Dear (name),

    It should be Dear Sir/Madam, Please clarify

    Hi Supriya,

    Yes, you are correct. The letter should start with Dear Sir/Madam since you may not know the name of the person you are writing to.
