This tutorial will teach you the key steps to identify the main topic and all parts of the IELTS Writing Task 2 question.
Follow the 3 steps mentioned in the video and you will never go wrong.
Now lets look at a few sample questions and see if you can identify the topics & different parts correctly.
a) "International tourism has brought enormous benefit to many places. At the same time, there is concern about its impact on local inhabitants and the environment."
Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages?
b) "In the modern world, the image (photograph or film) is becoming a more powerful way of communicating than the written word."
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
c) "The most important thing about a job is how much money you earn in that job."
Do you agree or disagree?
d) Some governments try to control the way a national language is used. For example, they may restrict the introduction of foreign words, or the use of dialects, or they may demand that a certain language be used in schools.
What are the benefits and disadvantages of these policies? Do you think they can ever be effective?
e) Fresh water has always been a limited resource in some parts of the world. Today, however, growing worldwide demand has made this a global problem.
What are the causes of the increased demand and what measure could governments and individuals take to respond to this problem?
a) Topic - Impact of International tourism on local inhabitants and the environment.
Question parts - 3 parts:
- Benefits of International tourism to places
- impact of International tourism on local inhabitants & environment.

Note: To discuss if advantages outweigh disadvantages you will have to first identify the benefits and impact anyway.
b) Topic - Power of image (photographs or film) as a communication medium over the written word.
Question parts - 1 part:
- Give your opinion about whether you agree or not that image is a more powerful way of communication than word.
Note: "To what extend do you agree or disagree" is another way of saying ‘Do you agree or disagree?’. However in your answer you need to use adjectives such as "strongly" or "partially" to describe if your agree or not.
c) Topic - The importance of earning money
Question Parts - 1 Part
- Give your opinion about whether or not money is the most important aspect of a job.

Hi,
I am bit confused between two types of opinion questions.
1. To what extend you agree or disagree?
2. Do you agree or disagree?
As per my understanding, both agreement and disagreement need to be included in question 1 but in question 2 need to take one side and explain on that.
Please advise.
Thanks
Hi Shikha,
You can choose to write about both, agreement and disagreement for both question types.
When the question asks you to state the “extent”, make sure to say whether you “strongly” agree/disagree or “partially” agree/disagree.
If you “strongly” agree/disagree, then you can write all paragraphs about a single view.
Hope this helps.
hi,
in case of agree or disagree, should i discuss both or write about one?
regards
Both styles are acceptable. You can write 2 paragraphs in agreement/disagreement or 1 paragraph each for agree and disagree.
hello,
if the question is:
Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages?
Which I should start with the disadvantages or the advantages?
Thanks, Petra
Hi Petra,
It doesn’t matter whether you start with disadvantages or advantages. However, you must clearly answer the main question i.e. “Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages?” This is usually done in the conclusion.

In one of the parts, there is a question that ask to write the extent that we agree or disagree.
Question: Advances in technology and automation have reduced the need for manual labour. Therefore, working hours should be reduced. To what extent you agree or disagree?
my confusion is ; what should be the focus point of our answer ?
Should it be automation, reduction in working hours or both.
Hi Komal,
Good question.
Look at the claim statement as follows:
Working hours should be reduced because advances in technology and automation have reduced the need for manual labour.
So in your essay, talk about whether you agree or disagree with reduction in working hours in the context of automation.
Hope this helps.

In “a”, Do we really required to write about Benefits of International tourism to places? I considered “a” comprises only 2 parts. Please clarify.
Dear Sahan,
To discuss if advantages outweigh disadvantages you will have to first identify the benefits and impact. Hence there are 3 parts.
1) Benefits of International tourism to places
2) impact of International tourism on local inhabitants & environment.
3) Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?

This is a Part 1 and Part 2 type of Essay. In this question there are two parts
1. To what extend you agree or disagree? and 2. Do you agree or disagree?
The style of approaching this essay should be
Introduction: 1) Paraphrasing the question and then 2) Conveying your answer of whether you agree or disagree and whether you agree fully or partially or want to add another part in order to enhance your content.
Paragraph 1: Should have examples and content for Part 1 – Agree part, and why you agree.
Paragraph 2: Must include the additional part you have introduced, with examples and content.
Conclusion: Closing paragraph
