IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic
Some parents believe that learning Mathematics at school is redundant and not be taught while others believe that it should remain a foundational subject whether or not it is used later in life.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Mathematics has always been one of the core subjects in academic studies. Despite many arguing that this subject should be excluded from school curriculum. Others tend to claim that is should retained as the compulsory subject. This essay will highlight why studying Mathematics at school is unnecessary, but why keeping it as the main subject is more advantageous.
On one hand, spending plenty of time studying Mathematics, which most people do not use beyond basic level as an adult, is worthless. For instance, most pupils use complex calculus equations and trigonometric formulae only to solve mathematical problems included in syllabus. Moreover, they retain this information only up till exams. A recent study by 'New Student' magazine has shown that students spend half of their study time practicing numerical equations in comparison to other subjects but rarely use this knowledge when they join the workforce\.
On the other hand, studying mathematics has its own benefits. It has potential of developing students cognitive skills. While solving complicated mathematics exercises, pupils have to think of numerous possible ways to get the answer; as a result, it will increase their logical reasoning skills. Aside from this, in recent days, the entrance test for admissions to high schools or colleges include tough Math questions to verify student aptitude. Hence, despite the fact that many believe that students should give more importance to other subjects, it is absolutely worth studying Mathematics to raise students level of intelligent quotient, which will help them distinguish themselves from thousands of other pupils.
To recapitulate, this essay discussed that studying Mathematics is a waste of time; however it also helps to develop students' mental abilities. In my opinion, schools should continue to encourage their students to learn mathematics.
