The percentage of overweight children in western society has increased by almost 20% in the last ten years. Discuss the causes and effects of this disturbing trend.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Model Answer:

Obesity among children in the western world has burgeoned by almost twenty percent during the last decade. In this essay, I will illustrate the factors contributing to this phenomenon and the severe consequences of this worrying trend.

There are compelling reasons for the ascending rate of obese children in western society. The primary cause is due to the avalanche of fast food outlets in every city. These chains serve calorie intensive food such as burgers, fries, soft drinks and so on. Moreover, lack of routine high-intensity exercise among children is a major concern in the western world. For instance, they neglect plethora of outdoor activities such as camping, jogging, group games and so on. Finally, in the modern western society, children spend majority of their spare time watching cartoons and playing digital games on computer or TV. Consequently, they gain weight due to the consumption of unhealthy food and sedentary lifestyle.

The phenomenon of burgeoning obesity among children in the western countries has severe drawbacks. The main effect is on health. Children will be susceptible to health issues in the future such as diabetes, varying cholesterol levels, cardiovascular problems and so on. The aforementioned illnesses are caused due to lack of exercise and unhealthy diet; indeed, health is wealth. Furthermore, spending abundant time either viewing television or computer screen can cause short-sightedness among children or catalyze the surge in other retinal based defects. Therefore, overweight children in the western nations will inadvertently harm their body.

Having considered a range of arguments, I have drawn the conclusion that rise in obesity rates among western children are due to consumption of unhealthy food, lack of exercises and viewing too much TV or computer screen. The consequences of this phenomenon are various health illnesses and eye-related defects.
